Understanding your IELTS band score

IELTS does not give you a pass or a fail. Instead, it reports how strong your English is on a nine-band scale. Understanding that scale helps you set a realistic target and read your result with confidence.

The nine-band scale

Scores run from band 1 to band 9. As a rough guide, band 9 is an expert user, band 8 a very good user, band 7 a good user, band 6 a competent user, and band 5 a modest user. Where your target sits depends entirely on where you are applying.

How your overall score is worked out

You receive a band for each of the four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Your overall band is the average of those four, rounded to the nearest half band. A strong performance in one skill can help balance a weaker one, so it is worth preparing across all four.

What score do you need?

There is no single right answer. The institution, employer, or authority you are applying to sets the score it requires, and some ask for a minimum in each skill as well as an overall figure. Check their requirement early so you know your target from the start.
