Maryam Umaru Yilareng did not set out to enrol in a course. She came to Make IT For Africa with her sister simply to register for IELTS, and left having signed up to prepare first, on the team’s advice. She calls it the best advice they got.
From registration to preparation
It is a small decision that changed her result. Maryam and her sister had come only to register; encouraged by the team, they took the preparatory classes first.
My sister and I came for the IELTS registration and was advised to take the preparatory classes … that turned out to be the best advice we got.
Managing the nerves
Maryam is honest about how hard the run-up felt. She was, in her words, always tense and worried, and what helped was steady encouragement to stay positive and confident in herself.
When we started our preparatory classes I was always tense and worried, but I was encouraged to be positive and be confident in myself. This helped me a lot … So with all the tension and everything, I still had a successful IELTS journey.
A result beyond the target
Maryam finished with a band 6, a “competent” user of English on the IELTS scale, more than she needed. Her story is a reminder that nerves are normal, and that preparation and encouragement can carry you through them.
