Why in-person classes made the difference for Gillian

Gillian Yiven Saghen had studied on her own online before she joined Make IT For Africa. In person, with a teacher, live exercises, and other candidates around her, she found something the videos had not given her, and went on to score a band 7.

More than a video lesson

Gillian had tried YouTube lessons, but found them less effective than seeing a teacher in person and doing live exercises. The preparatory classes, she says, helped remove her fear and build the confidence that carried into her result.

I really enjoyed the classes, the opportunity to see the teacher in person and doing live exercises unlike the YouTube lessons … During these preparatory classes I built a lot of confidence which helped remove fear from me.

Learning alongside others

What stood out for Gillian was studying with other candidates working towards the same goal. Hearing where each of them struggled, and where they did well, meant they could help one another, often before even turning to the tutor for clarification.

This was a wonderful experience to study with other candidates with similar purpose … we were able to help each other before even getting clarifications from the tutor.

Trainers who were there

Alongside the peer learning, Gillian credits the trainers themselves, in her words, tutors who “are there to deliver the IELTS”, gave their best, and were readily available when she needed help.

What a band 7 means

On the IELTS nine-band scale, a band 7 is classed as a “good” user of English.
