What to expect from vocational training at MIFA

Not everyone learns best from a textbook. Vocational and technical training is about doing, building real skills you can put to work. Here is what to expect from vocational training at Make IT For Africa (MIFA), through our Vocational Training Institute.

Learning by doing

Vocational training is hands-on. You practise the actual work, guided by trainers, and build up competence through repetition and feedback. The goal is not just to pass a test, but to be genuinely able to do the work well.

Three places you learn

Every course moves between the classroom, where you learn the theory, safety and standards behind the work; the workshop or lab, where you build the skill on real equipment; and a real workplace, where long courses include an internship guided by professionals. Some theory, demonstrations and follow-up can also be done online.

What you work towards

Long courses prepare you for a Vocational Qualification Certificate (CQP) or Diploma (DQP) from the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training. Shorter courses lead to an attestation from the Institute. Our guide to vocational qualifications explains the difference.

Who it suits

It suits women and youth who want a practical route into employment or self-employment, whether or not formal classroom study has worked for them before. It also suits apprentices and workers who want to organise and extend what they already know. You do not need to arrive as an expert; you need the willingness to learn and practise.

Where it can lead

Practical skills can lead to a job, to self-employment, or to starting a small enterprise. Many people combine a trade with the confidence and digital skills to run the business side of their work.

How to find out what is open now

The Institute is organised in departments, and not every department is open yet. The departments taking learners now are listed with their specialities, entry levels and indicative fees. You can also contact us, or read more about the vocational and technical programme.

Support along the way

Learning a trade is easier with encouragement. Our mentoring can help you stay on track and plan your next step.
