Victory aimed for a band 6, and scored an 8

When Victory Muyang Forchit came to Make IT For Africa, she needed a band score of 6. After a month of preparatory classes, she achieved a band 8, two full bands above her target.

A challenging start

Victory is candid that the courses were challenging when she began. What kept her going, she says, was that the IELTS tutors were readily available whenever she needed them, and she came to enjoy the classes, describing the month she spent preparing at MIFA as tremendously worthwhile.

I will not refute the fact that the courses were challenging when I just started, but the IELTS tutors were readily available to help. I enjoyed MIFA preparatory classes tremendously … spending one month at MIFA was amazing.

Practice rooted in real life

Part of what worked was how practical the preparation was. Victory describes wrapping a real-life experience around the assignments, and doing several practical exercises directly with her tutor, the kind of active practice that builds skill, not just knowledge.

What a band 8 means

IELTS results are reported on a nine-band scale. A band 8 is classed as a “very good” user of English; Victory needed a band 6, a “competent” user, and finished two whole bands above it.

Confidence that lasts

For Victory, the result was not only a score. She describes being able, now, to speak to anyone with confidence, something she puts down to all that speaking practice, and expects to carry into daily and working life.

Presently I can speak to anyone of any status with a lot of confidence … this is because of the several practical exercises I had with the IELTS tutor at MIFA.
